The story unfolds in a small coastal community in the south of France during the summer of 1935, as Europe edges inexorably towards another war. Tom Nash, a former British intelligence operative, has carved out a new life for himself on the French Riviera, where he now leads a simple existence as an author of travel books. Unfortunately, things become far from simple for Tom when his chequered past abruptly and violently catches up with him.
